Circuit breaker pattern
A circuit breaker stops calls to a failing service to avoid wasting resources and causing cascading outages.
"I keep retrying a broken API and it brings down my service — there must be a way to stop the flood."
A circuit breaker monitors downstream calls and, after detecting repeated failures, opens to block requests for a cooldown period, then probes the downstream and closes if healthy again.
