Availability Zone (AZ)
An Availability Zone is an isolated data center within an AWS region that provides independent power, networking, and cooling to reduce correlated failures.
"I want my service to keep running even if one data center has a power or network outage."
An AZ is a distinct physical location in an AWS region designed to be fault-isolated from other AZs while remaining low-latency connected to them; spreading resources across AZs reduces the chance a single infrastructure failure takes all copies down.
