Using external data connections as source
A PivotTable or PivotChart can use data stored outside the workbook (databases, OLAP cubes, or web queries) and keep results up to date via a managed connection.
"I want my report to refresh automatically from the company's database without copying tables into Excel every day."
An external data connection is a saved link (including credentials, query, and refresh rules) that lets a PivotTable/Chart pull source data from outside the workbook so you can analyze large, centralized datasets without embedding them in the file.
