Adding field to Columns area
Placing a field in the Columns area tells the PivotTable to break the data into side-by-side column groups for each value of that field.
"I need to compare categories across the top of the table so I can scan differences left-to-right."
Putting a field into the Columns area creates column-level grouping: each unique value (or group of values) becomes a separate column in the pivot, letting you cross-tabulate that field against values in Rows and Values.
