Layoff vs termination distinctions
Layoffs are employer-driven workforce reductions for business reasons, while terminations are ending an individual’s employment often for cause or performance.
"I need to know whether this exit affects our rehiring obligations, severance, and legal risk."
Layoff: a nondisciplinary separation due to business needs (e.g., restructuring, downsizing) that may be temporary or permanent and often triggers different notice, severance, and recall rights. Termination: an individual-focused end of employment, typically for performance, misconduct, or voluntary resignation, with different documentation, appeals, and potential legal exposure.
