Forking a repository
Making your own copy of someone else's GitHub repo so you can change it and propose those changes back.
"I want to fix a bug in a project but I don't have permission to push to the original repo."
Forking creates your personal repository copy on GitHub; you clone and work in that copy, then open a pull request to propose changes to the original.
