How to Prepare for a Technical Interview: A Complete Guide

Technical interviews test more than just code
A technical interview isn't only checking whether you can solve a problem — it's checking how you think out loud, how you handle a hint, and whether you can communicate a solution clearly under mild pressure. Preparing for all three matters more than memorizing solutions.
1. Know the format before you walk in
Ask (or research) whether the interview will be live coding, take-home, system design, or behavioral-plus-technical. Preparing for the wrong format is the single most avoidable mistake.
2. Practice explaining your thinking, not just solving
Interviewers are usually more interested in your problem-solving process than the final answer. Practice narrating your approach out loud — what you're considering, why you picked an approach, what the trade-offs are — even when you're practicing alone.
3. Review fundamentals, not just tricky problems
Most technical interviews lean heavily on fundamentals: data structures, time/space complexity, and clean code habits. A strong grasp of the basics usually matters more than knowing one obscure algorithm.
4. Do real mock interviews, not just reading
Reading about interview questions and actually answering one under time pressure are very different experiences. The gap between "I understood the solution when I read it" and "I could produce it live" is exactly what mock interviews close.
Pen2Pencil's AI Mock Interview tool gives you real interview questions with instant AI feedback on your answers — so you can practice the actual skill (answering under pressure, explaining your reasoning) rather than just reviewing theory.
5. Prepare a few real stories for behavioral questions
"Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate" comes up constantly. Have two or three real examples ready, structured simply: situation, what you did, what happened. Don't improvise these in the moment.
The night before
Sleep matters more than one more practice problem. Confirm the interview logistics (link, time zone, what to bring), then stop studying a few hours before — a clear head outperforms a tired one that crammed until midnight.
